Egress Window Excavation and Installation

Egress windows not only allow a safe, dependable exit in the case of fire, but also give your finished basement natural light and confortable ventilation. Whether installed in a family room, bedroom, or home office, we have a Egress window solution that will work for you.

Most municipalities are now requiring Egress windows or doors for habitable rooms in basements without existing below grade egress doors or windows in place. Our Egress window systems comply with the International Residential Code (IRC) 2006 Egress code (Section R310).

The following photos show how we perform the addition of an Egress window into your existing home.

Excavation around existing basement window
We first start by excavating an area around an existing basement window between 4 and 8 feet in depth depending on the depth of your basement.
Egress window location in basement Glass block window removal
Next we begin removing the existing window from both inside and outside of the home. We try to maintain the existing width of the original window as to now comprimise the structural integrety of the home.
Removal of concrete blocks
After placing dust shields in the basement, we use diamond bladed saws and impact hammers to remove the existing concrete blocks of the basement wall below the location of the old glass block window. We remove enough of the original wall to fit the new Egress window.
Framing of the concrete block opening for Egress window
We then fill in the existing concrete block with mortar to anchor the pressure treated lumber frame that will go around the new Egress Window.
Framed Egress window
The Egress window is now installed into the frame, sealed with foam and caulk, and trim is applied to the exterior of the window (not shown) to give a nice exterior appearance while allowing the window to be weather tight.
Exterior Wellcraft Window well installation
Finally we install a wellcraft window well with either an optional polycarbonate or steel grate cover, although no cover needs to be installed. The wellcraft wells have integrated steps to allow compliance with federal safety and building codes.
